What a Monday!
I went out about 530 this morning to unload feed and decided to hay the goats while I was at it. And this is what I found.
On Sunday evening Caramel didn’t show any major signs of imminent kidding so when I went out about 530 Monday morning to find fresh twins it was a bit of a surprise. It was a bit touch and go through the day. They couldn’t seem to get latched on to nurse and The hill pen is rough with a steep slope. So I called my boss to say I’d be late and could I come get a bottle. When I got back the doeling had a cold mouth and wouldn’t suck so I took her in the house and warmed her up. In the meantime her brother took an ounce of colostrum from the bottle.
I gave everybody a shot of B complex and once she warmed up baby girl sucked down a couple of ounces and went back to her mom. I moved them to an empty kennel more out of the wind and with more level ground, cleaned up and went to work.
When I got home baby girl was up and able to latch and nurse on her own while her brother seemed dull and listless.
So I put him in the bathroom with the heater on high and gave him another shot of B complex. His body temp was a bit low, just under 103 when it should be about 105. I was really sweating it because he just seemed like he wasn’t going to perk up at all.
Then it happened. I tried again and he was trying to suck my fingers and I finally got him on the bottle. He sucked down a whopping 3 ounces and was up wagging his tail. Whew. I let him rest while I did evening chores then took him back to his mom.
Lots more happened the last couple days but I’m too tired to tell right now. #appreciationI sooo appreciate my friend and mentor Karen for her advice and support
