My Edible Garden

I've been gardening for most of my life and have been a devoted fan of organic gardening the whole time. It just makes so much more sense to work in harmony with Mother Nature than to fight her. Besides which it is better for the planet and better for our bodies. Here you can see what I'm planting and harvesting, with gardening hints and resources thrown in for good measure.

Farmer Friday 7/30/2020

The forecast yesterday started out at 107 then changed to 108. The real high was 111°F. I spent the day moving water hoses and wetting down chicken pens. And I still lost a hen.  Today started out cooler but was 112°F at 2:00

Really?  I don’t think so. I think the boys in that pen are big enough to process. Just as soon as we get a break in the weather. Either that or I’ll have to fix up some light and do it at night.

We’ve made a tiny bit of progress on the shed. Need more pallets. Maybe next week.

Hard to see the water coming out but I might have solved a watering issue. I have a lot of long skinny spaces that are almost impossible to water with a sprinkler. I got out some 1/2” poly pipe and was going to just put short 1/4” Lines to each plant. Then I wondered if I could just poke holes in it and skip the extra lines. Worked great!

Even with extra water the cucumbers are really sad when it’s this hot.

Not a drop of rain.

After some equipment issues starting out well drilling is back on. At 35’ this evening and making about 5’ an hour.

Oops seems I skipped July

Wow. Didn’t realize how long it had been since I posted. Lots of new happenings. Unfortunately most of the flowers are gone.

But the cucumbers are looking good.

Really???? I have no idea how chickens do some of the crazy stuff they do.

Well drilling has begun.

My daughter found this wheel barrow in the trash. Missing wheel, broken handle.

And I had the spare parts needed to fix it.

Freya had 5 kittens.

They are all similar to this one.

Digging garden beds. No problem getting rock pathways!

Eggplant and basil from some big pots.

My youngest grand son is a cutie.

That is my rain record. 4.35 for the whole year so far. Which is actually better than last year when at this point I had only had 2 inches.  I finished up 2019 with 14.7” which is better that the previous year.
