My Edible Garden

I've been gardening for most of my life and have been a devoted fan of organic gardening the whole time. It just makes so much more sense to work in harmony with Mother Nature than to fight her. Besides which it is better for the planet and better for our bodies. Here you can see what I'm planting and harvesting, with gardening hints and resources thrown in for good measure.

Arizona Weather is Bi-polar

My grand daughter says Arizona weather is bi-polar. We’ve had a couple weeks of 108-112 temps. And no real rain for months. Today at 2:30 it was 105. At 3:30 the temp dropped to 72 and the skies opened up. Got .7” of rain in about 30 minutes.

The creek ran a little bit for the first time since last winter.

The did a number on the shade canopy but it wasn’t too bad. We were able to knock the water off and get it folded up in case it rained more.

Today we took the kittens outside to play for the first time.

Then I tackled the light set up. While the bird netting has kept the cats out of it, the mesh doesn’t stop bugs or mice from eating the seedlings.

I had some old window screens with metal screen that I picked up off the side of the road. I took the screen off and zip tied it to the shelves.

I’m trying to get it as tight as I can to keep the mice out.

It took forever to get all the wires tidied up.  And then I ran out of zip ties.

Today I appreciate the rain and the cooler afternoon.

The Weekend

My eggs and my daughters jelly at our farmers market Saturday morning.

I had a few Japanese eggplants and a little bit of kale

After market we had cold roast duck, pickeles of different kinds including pickled eggs and homemade olives with toasted sourdough and Brie.

Sunday morning we tore out the giant squash vine that was done and seeded a little of a small corn variety and some green and yellow bush  beans. We gave all the chickens a little milk, oyster shell and grit. We swept up the hay barn at the feed store and got some feed and other supplies. It only got to 102° so much better than the rest of the week.

The youngest babies are getting pretty big now.

And we did chores as a blood red sun was going down

Today I appreciate how different 102° feels compared to 112°
