My Edible Garden

I've been gardening for most of my life and have been a devoted fan of organic gardening the whole time. It just makes so much more sense to work in harmony with Mother Nature than to fight her. Besides which it is better for the planet and better for our bodies. Here you can see what I'm planting and harvesting, with gardening hints and resources thrown in for good measure.

Harvest Monday

Path into the front yard
Well I don't have any pictures of stuff harvested this past week! Both of my camera batteries were dead and I couldn't find my charger for several days. Talk about being blind, it was of course right where I last left it, under my nose!

Welcome to Harvest Monday though, I'll still be hooking up with our lovely host Daphne for the blog hop. In the meantime I will recycle pictures of past produce that are representative of this weeks harvest.

Here's a shot of the front yard path. Beginning to look a bit sad out there, the grape vine is suffering from the skelatonizers which I didn't see early enough to head off before there was a lot of damage. It's ok, no grapes this year anyway.

On the arch there is my first and perhaps only luffa for the year. The soil in this area is not the best so it hasn't grown nearly as much as the other squashes I have. And a bright cheery sunflower, soon to be chicken food.

This week I did harvest about another ounce of ground cherries.

A few more large fruited tomatoes

Some more beans

Eggs

A pile of green chilies bigger than this one

Some squash and eggplant. I also picked a lot of the small tomatoes. I've been trying to get some fall crops started but it has been really hot and while over the hill got some good rain I have had almost none.

  1. I have had a super hard time getting fall stuff going too, with all the heat! Sounds like you did well this week.

  2. Don't you hate it when stuff hides from you in plain sight! LOL!

I did the last of my fall direct seed planting this morning. In my growing area this is about as late as I can go and expect to get anything to grow and be mature enough going into fall. I hope the heat gives you a break soon so you too can get at the fall planting up process.

  4. It happens to me too, I cannot see what's right under my nose.
You had a good harvest and your luffa is a good size. Looks like the smooth skin variety, am I correct? Are you growing it for eating or for sponge?

    1. Honestly don't remember the variety, but I think it probably is the smooth one, looks like it any way. Mostly growing for sponge as I'm just not that big a fan of summer squash, but have all sorts of uses for sponges and scrubbers.

  5. I love the first picture of your front yard path! Very nice. I loose my glasses when they are right on top of my head :)

  6. I love your path too! Sounds like your harvest is still going strong. We are still having heat here also. Will be happy to have a little cooler weather! Nancy

  7. I am envious of your beautiful eggplant! Something keeps happening to our flowers shortly after they've blossomed and so we've yet to see even a shadow of an eggplant around here!

  8. Our fall and winter plantings are struggling too. My carrots are doing great but the spinach and chard is having a hard time getting started with all the heat we have had!!

  10. I don't like to admit how many times I lose things that are in plain sight...

You've certainly got a nice variety of veggies coming out of the garden now, I hope you can get your fall garden going soon, I'm trying to do the same but with mixed results also.

  11. I've been watching my ground cherries slowly form fruit over the past few weeks. We call them Cape Gooseberries and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to eating mine.

  12. Besides eating them as garden snacks, any tips on cooking with ground cherries?

  13. Your garden looks like it is doing well despite the heat. I too have had trouble getting going with fall crops because of the heat and humidity here. I'm much further north than you so days are growing shorter and it will be harder to get anything going that will mature in time. I really have to plant in August to get anything except lettuce and spinach.

  14. I love your front garden path. It's so picturesque. This is the first time I've seen a luffa when it was still growing.
