My Edible Garden

I've been gardening for most of my life and have been a devoted fan of organic gardening the whole time. It just makes so much more sense to work in harmony with Mother Nature than to fight her. Besides which it is better for the planet and better for our bodies. Here you can see what I'm planting and harvesting, with gardening hints and resources thrown in for good measure.

Harvest Monday

egg production is picking up
Harvest Monday, a day to show off your harvests. Brought to you by Our Happy Acres This post is for two weeks because last week I was having issues connecting with my wifi.

After a long spell of very few eggs production is picking up. Some of the old girls are laying a few extra large eggs a week while the young hatchery girls I bought last fall are just getting started with small pullet eggs.

baby pak choi
There's still lots of baby pak choi and red mustard greens. It's getting so warm some of the pak choi is trying to bolt, but still tastes delicious.

There's not much else to pick right now, since it was so hot and dry in the fall a lot of things didn't make it. I still have a pile of small and medium spaghetti squash, but the Red Kuri and the Delicata are gone. I just put in the first batch of lettuces so hopefully they will be ready soon.

A little catching up, January totals. totals do not count buckets of greens pulled for the chickens

  1. It's been terribly warm and dry here too, but last night we had a bit of a drizzle for the first time in weeks, hurrah! Lucky chickens to get fresh greens from the garden, it must make for some very tasty eggs.

  2. I agree, bolting pak choi is usually quite delicious! I eat the flowers too. A bit too early to plant lettuce here, but I do have some seedlings going inside.

  3. Fresh eggs always make for a happy harvest! I was browsing your sidebar and noticed your 2016 goal of planting a hundred trees. Very ambitious, and awesome! Though I know it was a while ago, I was wondering how that turned out? Did the ones you plant thrive?

    1. Well I got no where near 100. I do need to update the sidebar with new additions. I did lose a couple of figs but the rest are doing well. I have a lot of seedlings in pots still, they are waiting for things like retaining walls, fencing and soil building to happen before they go out. And with our terribly dry weather I think they will stay in pots awhile longer to save water.

  4. I really admire your thoroughness in weighing and recording everything. it is one of my new year resolutions for this year just so that I can see how much we do grow.

  5. We have only one of our winter lettuce left now so time to sow more for later in the season. Nothing like fresh, juicy lettuce!
